SPOTLIGHT: DOREEN MANUEL ON THE ART OF INDIGENOUS COSTUME DESIGN

In honour of Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated June 21st, we spotlight Doreen Manuel — an Indigenous (Secwepemc/Ktunaxa) artist and educator with a passion for advancing authentic representation and inclusion of Indigenous peoples in film. In February 2024, she and Carmen Thompson led an Indigenous Costume Design Workshop for 891 members, with discussions underway to offer similar workshops for other 891 departments in the future. In our latest Spotlight, Doreen shares insights into what inspires her work, her vision for the future of film in BC, and how the industry can open doors for more collaborative relationships with Indigenous peoples. IATSE 891 WINS PRIZE FOR 60TH ANNIVERSARY DOCUMENTARY

The Canadian Association of Labour Media (CALM) has awarded both IATSE 891 and CUPW The Cliff Scotton Prize for narrative, video, audio, or visual that reflects the history, traditions, and culture of the labour movement. Our 60th Anniversary documentary, commissioned by the 60th Anniversary Committee and directed by Business Representative Crystal Braunwarth, is available to view on the 891 website. We congratulate the hard work of all who brought this vision to life, and to Crystal for directing the vision into an award-winning celebration of our history and future as a Union.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: NANCY HUM-BALBOSA

Nancy Hum-Balbosa, new International Representative for Western Canada, shares her story for Asian Heritage Month, celebrated each May. An 891 Set Dec. member for eight years, Nancy loves creative work, uplifting others, and growing the labour movement so that more people from diverse communities can enjoy the benefits of union representation and opportunities offered by a career in film. This summer, she’ll be sharing her knowledge as a part-time facilitator for the Motion Picture Industry Orientation course, mentoring BC’s next generation of film workers.
