In Case of Death

If you have a friend or family member who has passed away and was a member of IATSE Local 891, please accept our condolences. If you are involved in executing the member’s estate, we hope this information will help you navigate through some of the things you might need to do.

Please Inform Us

To help ensure that you receive all the assistance you need at this difficult time, please contact us as soon as possible. In order to assist you, we will need to ask you some basic questions. These would be:

  • The date of death
  • The cause of the death
  • The names of any dependent children
  • Whether or not you would like flowers or donations made in your loved one's honour
  • Name of executor

Life Insurance

All IATSE Local 891 members up to the age of 65, aside from retired and suspended members, have life insurance through the IATSE 891 health benefits plan. After the age of 65, members have life insurance coverage if they are covered by the health benefits plan’s hour bank. When a member passes away, the IATSE 891 office will contact the insurer once we are informed, and the insurer will then start a claim. Payment to the deceased’s designated beneficiary is usually made within five days of notification to the insurer.

Accidental Death

If the member died as a result of an accident, prior to age 65, there may be additional compensation payable through IATSE 891’s AD&D insurance. Claims must be made within 365 days of the accident. In such cases, the plan may also be able to cover additional expenses, such as an education benefit for dependent children, and a spousal occupational retraining benefit.

Health Benefits Coverage

After a member passes away, the member’s spouse will remain covered under IATSE Local 891's Health Benefits Plan until the deceased member's hour bank is empty. Dependent children remain covered for health benefits until they turn 19 years old.

RRSP Investments

If the member had an RRSP account with CEIRP (managed by Great West-Life) through his or her membership, the IATSE 891 office will contact GWL, who will then contact the member's beneficiaries.

Counselling Support

Partners and dependent children of deceased members have free access to twelve 50-minute sessions with a counsellor through the IATSE Local 891 Employee and Family Assistance Program (FSEAP) The counsellor can help with grief and loss, financial issues, and many other issues. To access the advice and counselling services, call 1-800-667-0993.

In Memoriam Announcements

We will offer you the chance to place an "In Memoriam" announcement in Kinetoscope, our quarterly newsletter, which includes a short notice about the deceased member and, if possible, a photograph. We can provide you with a copy of the newsletter once it's been published. If you wish, we can also inform our members of any funeral or memorial services that you may be planning.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We are here to help.
